September is Pain Awareness Month

September is National Pain Awareness month. Education, awareness and action along with information about the latest advances in pain treatment can help bring chronic pain relief to the more than 100 million Americans who experience pain in their day-to-day lives.

The History of Chronic Pain Awareness

In 2001, the American Chronic Pain Association established Partners for Understanding Pain, and with the support of over 80 organizations of health care professionals and consumers, declared September Pain Awareness Month. Their goal was to use traditional media, public forums and other communication resources to help foster the understanding of chronic pain while eliminating the unfortunate stigma that historically was often attached to chronic pain sufferers. When health care professionals, individuals, businesses and legislators work together toward chronic pain awareness and understanding, this serious public health issue is more effectively addressed.

Help Raise Awareness

Are you or someone you love in need of chronic pain relief? Do you want to help raise awareness of this life changing health problem? Take time this September to help educate your community.

  • Talk to your primary care health provider and let them know about Pain Awareness Month so they can join the fight.
  • Communicate the importance of recognizing Pain Awareness Month to your local government and community leaders.
  • Contact local media and ask them to help spread the news in your community.

Partners for Understanding Pain supports the National Pain Strategy, a plan for effective, safe, high quality pain care and management. You can encourage local legislatures to enact this strategy using the sample letter for legislators found here.
