Chiropractic Adjustments for Stress Relief – Do They Work?
Chiropractic care has long been used to treat pain conditions in specific areas of the body, such as the back, neck, and head. More recently, it has been embraced for its holistic effect on stress. By getting adjustments through a chiropractor, patients can experience stress relief (as described below) along with other health benefits.
Research Proves Chiropractic Can Provide Stress Relief
Research over the last few years has demonstrated that chiropractic treatments can lower blood pressure, improve the heart rate, and optimize the immune system. Chiropractic care has also been analyzed for its capacity to target the mind-body connection and achieve stress relief, as in a study from 2011.
The Japanese researchers recruited 12 women and men who had been experiencing chronic neck pain. The study authors checked hormonal changes and brain activity with saliva samples and positron emission tomography (PET) scans to get specific readings of physical stress indicators.
Following a chiropractic treatment of the cervical spine (the part that runs through the neck), there was a substantial shift in the activity within the stress and pain regions of the brain. Stress relief was also evident in lower cortisol levels. Patients also reported that their quality of life was bolstered, and the pain was mitigated through the therapy.
How Does Chiropractic Therapy Lower Stress?
The fight-or-flight response associated with stress impacts us throughout our bodies. When you have chronic tension, the muscles and spine take on an unnatural position. In this abnormal posture, your immune system is less effective because nerves are being obstructed.
Chiropractic doctors align the spine so that stress will be alleviated. When the spine is in proper alignment, it allows the body to communicate in a healthy and efficient manner. These treatments enhance blood flow, soothe overworked nerves, and release tightness in the muscles. All these improvements help the brain move from a fight-or-flight state to relaxation.
Routine chiropractic visits can bolster your defenses and prevent the long-term negative impact of stress.
